Lost in Silence: When Faith Feels Absent

Have you ever felt like you’re shouting into the void, praying endlessly, and yet it feels like God is silent? Like you’re sitting in a dark room, surrounded by a lifeless emptiness, and no matter how hard you try to connect, nothing changes? I have, and it’s one of the most isolating experiences I’ve ever gone through.

For years, I’ve chased after so many things—relationships, money, and a “feeling” of fulfillment. I’ve thought that if I could just get this one thing, everything would finally make sense. But each time I reached for something, it slipped right through my fingers, leaving me feeling more empty than before.
I’ve prayed over and over again about the same things. I’ve cried out to God for answers—guidance, clarity, or just a word, a simple “wait,” or “not yet.” But nothing. The silence is deafening. And in those moments, I wonder: Does God hear me? Does He even care?
The Bible speaks to moments like this. In Psalm 13, David cries out, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?” (Psalm 13:1-2). David was a man after God’s own heart, yet he felt abandoned and unheard. Is this the feeling you get?
When you’re in a season where you feel spiritually dry and disconnected, and asking: What do I do now? How do I keep going when everything seems to be stuck in place? Do I continue reading my Bible? Do I keep praying? Do I worship, even when it feels like the songs don’t resonate with me anymore?
YES!! Do it all—the Bible reading, worship, prayer—even when the emptiness lingers and it feels like you’re walking through the motions with no real breakthrough. It’s in those moments that you have to remember the journey of Faith is often one of perseverance, not always immediate gratification.
Even in the midst of David’s frustration, he chose to trust in God’s goodness. He continued, “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me” (Psalm 13:5-6). This wasn’t the end of David’s journey—his faith didn’t stop with the unanswered questions.
So, when it feels like God doesn’t hear you… keep showing up. Keep seeking Him, even when the answers feel far off. Keep praying, even when it feels like your words hit the ceiling. Choose to worship, even when your heart is heavy. And trust that God is faithful, even when you can’t feel His presence.
I know the journey of faith isn’t always easy, but learn that in the waiting, God is still working. Sometimes He doesn’t answer in the way we expect, but He is always listening. And He is always present, even in the silence.
